Post Operative Issues

Hello Dr Bland

I am now 4 days post op, have removed the main bandage as instructed and left the dressing in place. I have a large bruise covering the palm of my hand, and I have noticed a smaller one travelling down my wrist very slowly, is this normal? Also my fingers feel very weak and I am struggling to hold even very light things (I have not attempted to lift anything with any real weight in it with my right hand) Will this weakness go as the hand heals?

Despite the aches and pains in the hand, I have not experienced any CTS symptoms in it since the op, whilst the left hand seems to be making up for the right hand.

Many thanks

Claire

You can get a variable amount of bruising after surgery and I don't think I would worry too much about weakness of grip 4 days after operation. As long as the original CTS symptoms have improved markedly at this point all is probably OK. We did think about injecting the left hand - we could do that for you tomorrow if you like? (that would also allow me to see the operated one) JB

I can't get to you as I cannot drive at the moment. I have booked an injection at the nearest doctors surgery for two weeks time.

Thanks for the reassurance regarding the bruising :) It's that that is causing most of the pain at the moment.

OK. If you have a chance to photograph it and don't mind doing so then save a picture of it and so long as it does indeed settle down we will then have an example of what it 'can' look like after surgery, that will be useful for reference. JB
