Hi,
Had a right Carpal tunnel done in August and I am still having trouble.

The obvious person to consult about this in the first instance is whoever did the surgery and the most important bits of supporting evidence will be any pre-operative investigations (nerve conduction studies and or imaging) - these may need to be repeated depending on what the nature of the symptoms is now. Who did the surgery and how have the symptoms changed as a result? JB

Thanks for getting back to me, <<The operation was done by a surgically qualified GP - edit by JB>>. He done both hands. My left fine but on my right its pain and stifness. I have no loss of feeling that has gone. I know that it can be up to a year for the hand to recover. They was both done open.

The improvement in sensation suggests that the nerve was probably released OK but sometimes the process of cutting the ligament can cause persistent problems in the wrist - this happens in a small proportion of CTS cases regardless of who does the surgery. Your first port of call should be back with the operating surgeon to see what he thinks the current problem is. (I've edited the surgeon name out of your post as there is no need for that to be publlic) JB

Thanks JB, I did contact his secretary and she did make contact with me to say that she has spoken to he surgeon who reckons he can't help with the problem. I need to see my own GP and try and get refered to see a orthodedic surgeon who might be able to help.

That's a little disappointing. Though I am not a surgeon myself I have always thought that if I was, and had carried out an operation with an unsatisfactory result, I would always want to know about it and have a chance to try and learn from the episode and it is hard to do that without seeing the patient again. Has there been any post-operative review at all by the surgeon or did they not even see you again to remove stitches? My guess would be that no satisfactory nerve conduction studies were done before surgery but it might still be wise to check them now - you are near enough to us for your GP to request these either in Canterbury or through the King's College service. For a hand surgery opinion you are within reach of Mr Belcher who has done quite a lot of work on CTS (there is a link to his website from my links page here). JB

I saw him to have my stiches out which was 2wks after having it done, I did mention about the pain and he said he would see me again around 6 months from Aug 2013. Saw him again in April and he felt there was no nerve damage. The pain can take up to a year to calm down. As I was still struggling I rang his secretary. And the out come was put in my first post. I will have a look at the site and speek to my GP. Thanks for your help.

To get any further with analysing what has happened and whether anything can be done about it someone will have to see you then. You need to be able to examine the hand and perhaps carry out some investigations at this point. See who your GP is prepared to refer to. JB

Have been back to by GP today as both hands are now giving intense pain, going to speak to another GP to see if injectioms may help. If not then refer me to my local hospotal. I am droping things with the pain and gp feels the two Capral Tunnel ops may not have worked

I think you are close enough to me that you could be referred for investigation either to my Canterbury or King's clinics - whichever is easiest for you to get to. I may also be able to test you shortly back at the GP surgery where the operation was performed. JB

I am back next thursday to see my GP to see if injections may help or to be rrefered to my local hospital which is the Tunbridge Wells Hospital or Maidstone. Do you think I am better off seeing you and if so how do I go about it

I think the best solution would be for me to see you back at the surgery where you had the operations along with the surgeon - that's the most local option for you and if your GP was able to refer to there in the first place there should not be a problem with us arranging a further consultation there - ask them and see what they say. We can then provide a report suggesting the best course of further action. If I am going to see you then I would prefer it if it was not injected first. JB
