Returning symptoms in other hand

Dear Dr Bland
After last seeing you, my symptoms were much reduced. I had a Colles fracture L wrist 2 July and since removal of the cast tingling, numbness and some pain have returned in both hands and in my arms, but much worse in the left. Did the questionnaire. I don't believe the results reflect the severity of the symptoms as the problems I have are related to positioning of the arms - I can only sleep on my back, as symptoms unbearable if on either side, pain and tingling sitting in passenger seat of car, and when riding my bike, knitting is almost prohibitively painful. Maybe this isn't CTS but only related to the fracture. Strange that the RH symptoms have increased around the same time. Thanks for your advice. K.

We haven't seen you for quite a while so lots could have changed in that time. We could certainly make a start on figuring out what is happening by repeating your nerve conduction studies and taking a look at the hands. I presume that whoever was dealing with the fracture has discharged you by now? As long as you are not under anyone else's care (apart from your GP) I'll send out an appointment. JB

Sorry, Dr Bland - I forgot I had to look on the Forum for the reply and was waiting for an email. I was discharged from the fracture clinic on 23 September. Symptoms are a little better this week - shall I wait a couple of weeks and then see how things are? Don't want to waste your time/NHS funds if not necessary. Thanks very much - will get back to you.

I would be inclined to check them out anyway - I tend to feel that you can never have too much information. I'll send out another appointment unless you explicitly tell me not to. JB

Dear Dr Bland
I have received an appointment for next Thursday, which I'm unable to attend because I'm babysitting during the day while my daughter moves house. This situation is likely to continue for the next couple of weeks. Would it be possible to reschedule for late December/early January? Thank you very much.

Of course I can delay that - may well be a week or so into January before there is another convenient space - Christmas is a bit disruptive to the service :-) JB

I've now moved it to early January - new letter in post. JB

Dear Dr Bland

I hope you got the message about our PC breaking down over Christmas. Got it back Monday so can communicate again.

I'm sorry I had to miss the appointment on Monday - this was because of a considerable worsening of a cough/cold I've had since mid December. I rang and have made another appt for 5 February. Thank you for your patience. K

Dear Dr Bland

Have completed another symptom test online prior to appointment on 5 February. Have to say is not easy to be accurate, as although during last two weeks not woken during the night much, usually symptoms are there first thing on waking. Also vary greatly depending on activity - riding bike much is moderate to severe, knitting severe usually, and scrubbing cupboards and playing piano/organ seem to cause moderate to severe symptoms afterwards not necessarily at the time! A bit different from before, probably because of L Colles fracture back in July.

Looking forward to seeing you - Kay

Thankyou for that. The severity questionnaire is not perfect but it has been widely used in CTS studies and we have huge amounts of data collected with it so we carry on using it for consistency. See you in a few days. JB

Sorry - wasn't intending to criticise the questionnaire - just detailing symptoms that don't fit in case you needed to know before Thursday! Really grateful someone is doing this long-term research. No need to reply K
