Inevitable surgery...

Hello Dr Bland. I had another injection on Monday and although initially I thought it had worked, was woken up throughout last night with arm pain and numbness, so I am fast considering the surgery on my left hand. Could you tell me what I have to do to instigate this and what the waiting list is like for surgery?

Also, we spoke about something to 'take the edge off' in advance of the surgery as last time I found the local anaesthetic pretty vile. Everything else seemed ok but that is one of the things I am most worried about. Is there something you could recommend? Regards

I'm not sure until I get in to the office this morning but I think we may have a cancellation slot for surgery on 27th October, otherwise the wait for surgery is round about the end of January I think. I will arrange surgery for you when you decide it is convenient. Having had one side done alredy you qualify as an 'expert patient' by now. It would be worth discussion pre-pedication with Dr Rine as it is more an issue for the surgeon than for me. I'll add a bit more to this later as I've been in London for the last three days and am a bit out of touch with East Kent. JB

Thank you for that. Would you be able to give me a call when you know for definite about surgery times. Surgery for me would be more convenient in school holidays (27th is possible) do you have anything on 21st December at all? If not and 27th October is arranged, would I have to come to you for re-testing, and then a pre-op talk with Dr Rine followed by surgery?
Many thanks.

OK We have one space for surgery on 27th October. That appointment would be combined pre-op and surgery on the same day, probably starting about 10:30 am though Dr Rine may adjust the times yet. That would get you an early surgery slot but would not allow time for you to discuss pre-medication with John Rine. After that we have space on 17th November and 24th November. I am going to put these surgery slots up on the announcements page of the site so that everyone in the queue has some chance to fill them. JB

Thank you for booking me in for the operation. The thing I forgot to ask, do you need me to have more tests at K&C before the operation, bearing in mind I have just had the injection. About 60% improvement with the pins and needles and numbness, but not helping with the pain at nightime. If I do need to have more tests, would it be a 'true reading' as I have just had the jab? Regards

It's not absolutely essential but if you can spare the time I will schedule an appointment to update the results just before surgery so that we have an up to date record if anything goes wrong. JB
