How long after surgery should I keep dressing on for?

Hi everyone.
I had my right hand operated on 11/12/2013 and removed the padded dressing 2 days later as advised by the hospital.
My question is.... How long do I need to keep the dressing over the wound on? I changed it yesterday & today but truth be told it's really starting to irritate me now! Obviously, if I need to keep one on I will do, just feeling hopeful!

Every surgeon has their own ideas about how they want their wounds to be managed post-operatively and I would not want to interfere except to say that they should have told you what they want you to do. JB
