Lump in wrist
Hi Dr Bland,
Since having the injection 2 weeks ago, my symptoms have improved somewhat, but I have a lump on my wrist that is rather sore and I'm wondering if this is keeping the tingling sensation in my wrist. I wasn't sure if I should come back to see you or go to the doctors about it, or just leave it until the operation in August!?
Regards.
It was there when I came to see you a couple of weeks ago, but I have noticed that my wrist is sore around this area & I wondered if this could have caused the capral tunnel to flare recently? Its not big but is visable. I will see if I can get a gp appt. If I cant, what days do you have the clinic so I can pop by?
Regards
We are generally here Monday Tuesday and Thursday - though this Thursday is a bit odd because I have to go to Ashford in the morning. A modest swelling at the palmar side of the wrist an inch or two up the forearm from the wrist crease is quite common in CTS and is referred to in the American literature as a 'volar hot-dog' - no-one seems to be sure quite what it is! It may be a sign of inflamation of the tendons. JB
That's interesting to know, I was wondering if it was a cyst causing the pain and swelling. I've got an appt for next Tuesday with GP, so will see what they say first.
Thank you so much for your help on this.
Scrap that, my wrist is really hurting again. And I have swelling in the bottom palm of my hand as well as the wrist. Should I come to you on Thursday or go to the walk in clinic there.
As I am unavailable on Thursday morning (and Wednesday is a day when I am working at Kings) I would try GP or walk-in approaches - does it feel hot as well or is it just swollen? JB
It's just swollen and not as painful as last night but still more swollen than two weeks ago. As I work all day today, I wi try and cope the best I can as I can't have time off work at the moment.
OK let us know how it is doing from time to time. We aim to assess the outcome of steroid injection at 6 weeks. JB
I'm in agony again with it. I've gone to the walk in in Canterbury. They have told me to see you still and given me a sling & pain killers. I've seen your receptionists and am currently in a cafe in the hospital, hoping I can see you this afternoon. I gave the receptionists my mobile number.
I believe Emma spoke to you this afternoon and took a look at it. As I said I was at the William Harvey all morning and then trying hard to catch up with the clinic all afternoon. From what Emma tells me it doesn't sound infected and it is perhaps most likely to be some inflammation of the flexor tendons. Ordinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are probably the best approach to it in the short term. JB
I went to the GP & he said it was tendinitis I'm suffering from as well and told me to stretch it out. It's made a little difference but I'm still suffering so roll on the operation. Also I have another minor op on the Thursday before and wanted to make sure this won't effect things.
Regards FL
Depends what the other operation is I think. As long as it's not something in the same arm I wouldn't anticipate much trouble. JB
It's very hard to figure out what a lump is without seeing it (someone sent me a photograph of one this week which helps but there are limitations to that too). It's probably most convenient to let your GP look at it, though I gather GP appointments are getting scarce again now. If that proves difficult you can drop in here when we are doing a clinic so that we can have a quick look at it. JB
