I'm seeing a hand surgeon on the 21St April about my constant pain in both hands and numbness. Work have told me to cut bread in the machine but I've told my line leader that I don't want to take the chance in doing so incase my grip goes. Even though I have had the carpal tunnel release some time back just would like to get this inconvenience sorted. Also had to stop self cathetizing due to my grip playing up, in a recent cystoscopy they have seen two lesions in the urethra, the urologist has put me on tamsolosin. Will let you know how next week goes. Mark

Thanks Mark - are they as painful as ever? JB

Thanks in getting back to me, yes my left is more painful then the right as I seem to use it more. Simple things like undoing lids and holding the dogs lead is sending pain from hand up to my elbow. Mark

Hi jeremy,

Have seen the consultant today and he is going to do a referral to see you for another nerve conduction test up at Kings. Can you let me know when it booked so I can book time off. Thanks Mark

You will have to come and see me in Canterbury I'm afraid - or possibly at Borough Green if that is more convenient? JB

Borough green would be more easier to get to by train please let me know when you receive the referral and when its booked in to see you at Borough green. Mark

To do it a Borough Green we will need to tinker with the system a bit. I'll need a referral sent to Faye Chalk, the secretary at Borough Green. I'll check but this will probably need to come from your GP and I can then copy a report to you, your GP and the surgeon. JB

OK I'm seeing my gp on Tuesday morning could you suggest that referral to Borough green in a e mail to me so I can show my gp to get it done. Do I need to ask the gp to mention your name for the nerve test. Mark

No-one but me does NCS at Borough Green so there's no need to specify. I'll drop you an email over the w/e. JB

I have managed to print what you mentioned on the forum and hopefully it will be enough for the gp to do the referral for Borough green. Will let you know sometime on Tuesday. Mark

Very good - see you then. It's far more convenient there for you I think and there's no real difference in what I can do. JB

Today I have had a letter from Kings hospital to have a Emg on the 8th June, is this the same as the one you are doing at Borough green. Mark

No that's your orthopaedic surgeon sending a request to Kings and them booking you in with someone else. Just tell Kings you don't need it. JB

OK thanks. So the test that you are doing is enough to do as not sure the difference between nerve conduction test and the EMG. Sorry in sounding stupid. Mark

The terms are used interchangeably in the UK. Strictly NCS (Nerve conduction studies) is the bit you are familiar with. EMG (Electromyography) is sticking needles in muscles. We use both techniquest as appropriate for the particular clinical problem but tend to refer to the whole bettery of tests as 'EMG" a lot of the time. The Americans like the term EDX for 'Electrodiagnostics' which avoids much of the confusion. JB
