Splint

Hi,

I saw you yesterday and you gave me a splint for my Left hand to wear at night, This might sound a silly question but how tight should it be when i first put it on it was moving around a bit so i tightened it but not sure if it was to much i did get a small mark around the thumb area so i loosened that off a bit,
Any advice would be great,
Many Thanks

Fairly loose is the answer - the aim is only to keep your wrist straight, not to cut off the circulation to your hand. it only needs to be fastened tightly enough to stop it falling off. JB

Hi you asked me to let you know how i am getting on with the splint, sorry for the late response but i have been away on holiday,
i feel that the splint has helped a little although i am still experiancing pins and needles in my hand during the day and sometimes whilst driving, depending how long the journey is,
I am happy to continue to wear the splint unless you feel there is another option,
Many Thanks Lynda

If the symptoms are still significantly troublesome then the next logical step would be steroid injection. We can arrange that for you if you wish. Read through the section of the website on treatment with steroids and then let us know if you want to go ahead. JB

Hi,

I've read the steroid info and i think that would help, when could you do an injection for me, and does it hurt,

Monday to Thursday next week, afternoons are usually a bit quieter. Not usually painful - we ask people to give the procedure a pain score from 0=none to 10=worst pain imaginable - the average answer is 2 - roughly comparable to a blood sample. JB

How are the symptoms otherwise? Can you run through another symptom severity questionnaire on here for me - go to the 'My CTS' section and look for the option to 'take another severity score test'. JB

On those scores it looks as though one hand is cured while the other has gone from being normal to pretty bad  - are the left and right sides reversed for one questionnaire? JB

My right hand was operated on a couple of years ago and has been fine since, the symptoms started in my left had about a year ago, and are getting worse I don't feel as if the steroid injection has helped much at all in fact I'd probably say it's worse if that's possible since I had it done.

Surgery on the right hand can't have been that long ago as it hadn't been done when we first tested it in April 15, which was only last year - but at least the questionnaire results now make sense. We should probably see you again with a view to arranging surgery. There are a few things that I would like to go over in a face to face consultation and we will take the opportunity to re-check your NCS and see if it has become measurably worse. I'll organise an appointment. JB
