Continued Symptoms/Acupuncture Treatment

I have had two injections in each wrist, The left wrist has remained almost symptom free whilst the right wrist is now suffering once again from severe pain and tingling at night. It is also stiff during the day. I have been trying acupuncture for 7 weeks now and it has really helped lessen the symptoms, However, I am paying for this privately. Interestingly, I had to miss my session last week and the symptoms are once again severe. I would say that the acupuncture lessened the pain level from 9 down to about a 5 with a return to the 9 having missed a session. I have also tried wearing the splint during the day and think it helps a little even if only as a reminder to try to rest the wrist. I now have symptoms of nodal osteoarthritis in one finger joint which my sister also has. I also have Coeliac (as does my sister) and wonder if you know of any link between these two conditions and problems with tingling and numbness. I am trying to get hold of a CTrac device but have not managed to source one yet. I am not keen to have an operation as I am a Carer and would like to continue to try alternative methods, Are there any studies coming up for other treatments?

Sounds as though acupuncture is acting as a pain suppressor but not influencing the underlying CTS doesn't it. I'm not aware of any link between coeliac disease and specifically CTS though there are lots of neurological complications of coeliac generally so it's not impossible. CTRAC should still be available but is quite expensive and I've not been very impressed with it so far, albeit from rather limited reports and only one independent published study. There are no local trials planned of anything else at present. JB

I thought I would update you to let you know that I have now purchased a CTrac device and have been using it for a few weeks. So far I have not noticed an improvement but I have been sloppy about doing it regularly. I am now going to embark on a regular programme for 6 weeks using a diary to help maintain regular useage and monitoring of symptoms. I have also been having acupuncture which definitely helps manage the tiredness and pain but so far has not helped the CT. For a couple of treatments I had acupuncture with wires attached (supposed to increase the intensity) but I think that made it worse. I have asked my doctor to refer me to an osteopath as I have pain in my upper arm, back and shoulder (I suspect it may be linked to the CT but could easily be caused by sleeping with my arm hanging over the edge of the bed!).

Thanks for the update. I'm particularly interested to hear how people do with the C_trac as it has been heavily promoted but I still haven't seen a really good trial so all we have to go on is anecdotes. JB
