Left leg numbness

Hello Dr Bland

Its been quite a long time since we have had communication, but I do not have any problems since the op on my right hand. I still have a few problems now and again with my left hand but nothing really troubling.

The reason I am on here is that I was referred back in January 2021 for trouble with my left leg. I had an incident when lifting a very heavy large object in March 2021 and was in enormous pain for approximately three months. I was sent for an MRI on my pelvis roughly about six months from when the incident occurred (I felt as if something had snapped in my buttock) but was told there was nothing showing on that scan. I continued to have symptoms on the left hand outer side of the left leg from top of thigh to the knee and ankle. In January this year I experienced severe pains along this outer edge and went to see the GP as the pain was keeping me awake. I wondered whether it might be something like peripheral neuropathy and the GP thought it could be this and referred me to your clinic. That severe pain cleared up after two weeks, but I am still continuing to experience pins and needles and numbness on the whole of that outer edge of that leg, particularly worse at night when lying down.and I do not seem to be walking the same way as I did pre incident.

Because of Covid I did not really want to attend a hospital, but I have now had my first injection so do not feel as "at risk"! This is why there has been a delay in me contacting you since the letter referring me.

The letter says about completing a questionnaire but I do not know which one I am supposed to complete as the letter refers to carpal tunnel and I thought the only questionnaire I know is related to your hands. Do you also deal with leg problems as I am a bit confused as to what I should be completing!

A.H.

I'm sorry but you are caught up in a misunderstanding there. GPs are not allowed to refer to my clinic for suspected peripheral neropathy or leg problems like this so they have probably just sent in the CTS request form instead in the hope of slipping round the referral rules. Yoo really need a referral to neurology for this, not to me. Could you point this out to the GP please. JB

Thanks very much for that. I had a feeling I had been referred to the wrong person. I did not see my own GP but another GP who I had not seen before. Much appreciation for directing me to the right channel. Kind regards AH

OK good luck with getting it sorted out. It's possible you might end up with a referral to me via neurology eventually but it may not be necessary - depends whether they find a satisfactory explanation without my help really. JB
