Comments on pain and request

Hi Dr Bland

First time on site, been reading your research article, with particular interest about different views of pain on injection. Thought I would add my experience of my first and the only injection I have had to date, think it was 2009. Had injection in both wrists, left one was scale 1, right believe scale 3. I was not looking forward to injection as I had heard it was painful, my experience of the injection itself was not painful, although in the right hand which was the more severe one, an ache started up almost immediately and became a pain up the entire arm two hours later, unlike anything I had experienced with carpal tunnel symptoms before (just had numbness and tingling in hands, no pain) this lasted for nearly four weeks and I went to my GP who told me it would eventually go away. No symptoms in the left arm. The pain in the right arm did disappear after four weeks and I was carpal tunnel symptom free for a while, cannot remember how long.

Reason for my visit Dr Bland is that my carpal tunnel is playing up again, probably due to all the gardening I do! I would like to take the risk of having another injection again, as maybe I will not have the same symptoms as before, i.e. pain after injection, also would be interesting to see what happens this time. Could this please be arranged Dr Bland?

I'm sure we can arrange another injection but I think it would be a good idea to test the hands again as I have not seen you since December last year. So far it has always been fairly stable at grade 3 right 1 left but I would not want it to get a lot worse.  It would indeed be interesting to see whether the same pattern of symptoms recurs after injection or not. The more I look into this the more it looks as though it is worth doing a systematic study but the work involved in getting such a trial through ethics and research governance approval is a serious disincentive. I will arrange you another appointment with me if that is alright with you. JB

Yes that would be fine, any chance of fitting me in at the end of this week, otherwise will have to be third week in July onwards, preferably Thursday or Friday as I work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks AH

I was going to go for 25th June but it appears you are working that day. The only other alternative I can see is the end of Thursday afternoon - which may involve some hanging about as the Thursday afternoon clinic usually over-runs anyway. If you can make it here for 16:30 Thursday 21st June we will see what we can do. JB

Ok There isn't time to get a letter out but just turn up at my clinic on Thursday. JB
