Thumb/wrist pain after surgery

Following successful CTS surgery on R hand 2-3 months ago I have developed constant pain in side of R wrist. Pain has been present for 3 weeks and is not improving. Seems to be related to thumb tendon and am now getting aches further up the arm.

Have submitted current questionnaire

That may be a complication of the surgery. Who ended up doing the operation? JB

There are a couple of little tests we could apply to try and get a handle on that.

1) If you put your weight on the heel of the hand - for example by pushiing up from a chair or doing press-ups with the palm flat on the floor - does that hurt?

2) Hold the hand out in front of you with the elbow bent and the thumb pointing upwards. Keep the wrist in that position and make a fist with the thumb inside the fingers. Keepiing the fist and without rotating the forearm bend the wrist towards the floor - if that hurts then make a note of where.

1) Yes, where radius meets the wrist.

2) This hurts along the side of the wrist and to base of thumb.

Sorry about the dealy - I've been away. 1) is probably a direct complication of surgery - with luck it will settle in time. 2) may well be a form of tendon inflammation called De Quervain's tenosynovitis. You should get your GP to check this - some surgeries can treat it directly, others will refer you to either the hand triage clinic or the hand surgeons but however they do it it's fairly treatable. GP has identified as De Quervain's tenosynovitis and have treated with steroid with little effect. Does the GP need to refer on to hand surgeons?

That would be the next logical step yes. Unfortunately they have a long queue at present. JB
