Pain In Hand and Wrists

Dear Dr Bland
for the past couple of weeks I have experienced a great deal of pain in my right wrist and hand. The pain is on bending my wrist, if pressure is put on inside of my wrists and on movements particular twisting movements e.g open jars and turning door handles on locks. The pain also radiates into the back of my hand, I do not have a lot of numbness just some if holding a phone for a long time but nothing near the levels previously experienced, I am also not being woken at night. Could this be my carpal tunnels propblems? I thought it may of been gout which I have suffered from before but have had my uric acid levels done and they are fine, whilst thinking it mat be gout I have not tried a splint yet. Thank You

From that description it does sound like a different pattern of symtoms to the CTS. Gout is an interesting thought. I'm not a rheumatologist but I thought the blood uric acid levels did not necessarily have to be raised during an acute attack - I'll have to try and look it up to find out one way or the other though. I would begin with a new consultation with your GP for this. JB

Edit - I checked - about one third of patients with an acute atack of gout in one joint have normal serum uric acid levels so a normal blood test certainly does not exclude it. JB

It should be possible to give you a new splint. Bring the old one in and they can just transfer the aluminium support to a new outer. JB
