Another bike accident

Hi Dr Bland et al,
We agreed to look at my problem (1/5, left hand only) prior to winter triathlon training. I've had another cycling incident where my left hand was so numb that I couldn't use the brake properly on my bike when out training. It's also difficult to pick the right times to waggle my wrist in order to get the numb sensation to die down, particularly in traffic. I'm riding well over 100 miles each week recently and the problem isn't getting any better. Do you think we could go for an injection to get me through the racing season and consider surgery once the season is over.
I don't want an operation but it's becoming increasingly obvious that the small incidents I've had on the road whilst cycling so far, are going to end up being a bad accident one day and I don't bounce so well at 60 as i used to in my 20/30's.
Thanks,
Martin.

We could certainly inject it. I would reserve judgement on whether to operate until after we see the response to injection. The quickest way to get it injected would be to drop in to the CTS clinic on Thursday morning - are you free that day? JB

Hi Dr Bland,
Please accept my apologies for not responding earlier, a holiday and other stuff got in the way.
I could attend the CTS clinic tomorrow morning, Thursday 4th July....
I'm racing this evening but will check the site tonight on my return.
Wishing you well,
Sincere thanks,
Martin

There is no CTS clinic this morning because of other events I'm afraid. We might be able to manage next week. JB

Thank you,
I'll come along and see if you can fit me in.
Kind regards,

It will probably have to be early in the morning and I will need to check that Michael Nicholas is here as I have to go to London so don't make a journey in unless I confirm that it is OK. JB

Hi Doctor Bland and others,
I had my injection this morning from Michael Nicholas. Generally I'm a scaredy-cat with needles but I couldn't have been in better hands. I was aware of the injection but with no pain at all.
I've previously had steroid injections into my ankle, shoulder, elbow and buttocks at different times, this was the easiest experience of them all.
I'll update later with whatever happens.
Thank you both, most sincerely.
Martin.

Hi Doctor Bland,
The steroid injection in July reduced the numbness by 50% and increased the onset time from 15/20 minutes to over half an hour. The effect lasted about 6 weeks.
I'm now back into winter training and as such riding with my hands on the brake hoods a lot. I'm sorry to say that he numbness is a real safety issue again. If I don't notice it coming on, then I need to brake suddenly, I'm really not in control.
I would really appreciate the opportunity to come and see you to talk it over, if that is OK with you??
Sincere best wishes,
Martin.

No problem, let's re-test it and see if there has been any deterioration in nerve function. I'll send out an appointment. JB
