Hi Dr Bland I had my operation on my right hand 5 weeks ago and still in considerable pain. I have been told i now have Pillar pain and it will go but take time.......i would like to know if there is anything else i can to help this as i need to get back to work and still have not a lot of strength in the hand and the pain is at most times unbearable even when taking strong painkillers. can you please let me know. Thanks

I presume that suggestion of pillar pain comes from John Rine as I have not seen you since surgery. There is no clear consensus of opinion on how to treat it I'm afraid. I have one article discussing the problem which points out that rest, splinting, graded exercise, elasticated wraps, heat, ice and massage have all been suggested but that there is no good evidence that any of them help. I will discuss it with the hand therapy team and probably also arrange to see you again myself, though it may take a few weeks to find a suitable appointment slot.

I've also removed your identifying details from your message as there is no need to advertise who you are to the rest of the world - I can identify Canterbury participants on the forums from the reference numbers held in your registration page. JB

Yes Dr Rine said it was pillar pain,it would be good to get an appointment with you regarding this as i cant go back to work at the moment as the pain is too bad and as i cant lift anything either with any weight attached to it.
My work involves lifting and pulling so this is a problem for me.
I feel like a real pain going back and forth to the drs with it so any help would be appreciated.

I've found a space on Saturday 13th July in an extra clinic we are doing - appointment letter in the post. JB
