RETURN OF CTS IN BOTH HANDS

Since last injections (left April right May) had no probs til last week. Palm of both hands felt tight and sore to open when waking up in morning - no symptoms during night. As the week has progressed they have gone slightly worse. As pain goes from palm then get pins n needles in to fingers. It lasts up to about half hour. No probs during day or through the night. Not sure if this is the start of getting worse again and requiring treatment.

Hard to be sure - add another severity questionnaire to the record on the website now and then another one in two weeks and we'll see how the answers are evolving then reach a decision on what to do next. JB

I completed a severity questionnaire on the 18th July as requested. Since then both hands have become a great deal worse. During Sunday evening my right hand became very tight in the palm, wrist and fingers. As the night progressed all sorts of strange sensations seemed to go through both the palm and fingers. At 2am I was still awake with discomfort. I slept on and off through the rest of the night. At one stage the fingers became numb apart from the tips which seemed to have a burning sensation. The left hand just had a touch of pins and needles. Last night it was the left hand which played up. I woke around 3am with pains in my wrist and a lot of pain in my fingers. This carried on and off until around 8am. During the day I do not seem to have a problem other than my right hand which seems slightly sore in the palm. Don't think I can put up with the pain if it get's any worse. PP

Judging by the latest symptom score it is mostly the right hand causing trouble at present - is that right. If so then we haven't injected that one since August 2012 and it could reaonably be injected again next Monday as a quick experiment. JB

Sorry but I had one hell of a night last night. I woke just before 3am with terrible pains in the thumb and palm of my right hand. The pain was too excruciating to be able to open or clinch my hand. I walked round the house for a while until it turned to pins and needles and then eventually disappeared. I was then woken another four times with my left hand. Again the pain was excruciating but in my index finger, ring finger, palm and wrist. This would last for some ten minutes and then move into my palm, thumb, wrist and travel up my arm some 8 ins. Could you please inject both hands on Monday?
I really think it is time to discuss operating as I can't keep on like this. PF

We can inject both but it does sound as though it may be heading for surgery. If Nick agrees when doing the injections he can get you added to his list for operation. JB

At last a nights sleep ................Things seem to be progressing well. After the steroid injection in the left hand I felt pain in the top of the thumb several times during the afternoon that only lasted about 10-15 seconds on each occasion. I slept throughout the night with no problems at all. On waking - Left Hand - I felt tingling in top of thumb and very, very slight pain in palm but this again only lasted 10-15 seconds. Since then everything has been great. Right Hand - pain in palm returned once for about 30 seconds in the afternoon then no other symptoms during the rest of the day or night. On waking this morning no pain but palm felt tight although not as tight as pre injection. This symptom left after about 20 mins and all feels great now. Will keep you updated of any changes. Thank you once again. PF

It never ceases to amaze me how swiftly injection can be a quick fix for severe symptoms. We will have to give some more thought to what else to do with you though. Keep in touch. JB

I am pleased to say that my left hand is totally normal. No pins and needles or any sensations during the day or night. Right hand still stiff on awakening in the morning but no other symptoms. When I saw Nick on Monday I asked him to place my name on the waiting list for surgery on my left hand. I explained to him that every time the symptoms return they become more and more severe. I dread the thought that the pain could be more severe so thought surgery is my only option. (Unless of cause you know something else?). Thank you again for all you are doing for me. Most grateful. Yes I think that's a pretty reasonable course of action as long as you are happy with the small risk of a poor outcome from surgery. JB
