Enquiry reference Hand splints
Hi Dr Bland
I came to your clinic on 8th October and you gave me a diagnosis, I am level 3 in both hands. I was fitted for splints to wear at night. I have been doing this but unfortunately i cant continue on the right hand as i have been waking just after a couple of hours and my fingers are swollen and the pain is unbearable, it takes me ages to get the feeling back and its very painful whilst it is coming round. What would you suggest and this is making my hand worse.
Look forward to your response
Regards
Rachel Robinson
Hi Dr Bland
Thanks for your quick response, I am not sure if you remember my consultation with yourself and your colleage, but as i explained to you i take a lot of Morphine already for my spine condition, and would rather not have more drugs put into my body. My hands feel like they are dteriorating quite rapidly the pain at night is getting a lot worse, and its taking me a lot longer to get the feeling back and its excruciating brings tears to my eyes. I think i would prefer to have surgery obviously one at a time but the pain is worse than ever and making me feel quite deoressed and bad tempered. Please could you give me your coments about this.
regards Rachel
We can inject them much faster than we can operate on them and as you already have steroids circulating in your body anyway - produced by your adrenal glands and ovaries - I would generally not worry about a trivial extra dose into a wrist if it offers the chance of very quick relief of severe symptoms. It's also quite a useful predictor of how it might respond to surgery subsequently. JB
Sounds like either a splint fastened too tightly, or deteriorating CTS (or just a very unfortunate sleeping position perhaps). I would try a steroid injection next. You can arrange that by calling the SIPC office (details in the contacts page here) JB
