Post Surgery Recovery
I am due to have the de-compression surgery on 15 March on my left hand. I appreciate I will not be able to drive for 2 - 4 weeks after this, however what is the normal time to expect to have off work? Will I be signed off by the doctor who performs the surgery. Would like to advise my manager so she can put cover in place. Thank you.
Thank you Dr Bland, I will speak to Dr Rine. My pre-op visit is the same day as my op - I presume this is ok?. My job is office based, working with case files (heavy!) and using computer all day. And yes I do drive to work, and would need to use bus if I can't drive. I will advise my boss it is likely I will be off work for two weeks. Sarah
Same day pre-op is fine from a medical point of view, though it doesn't give you much chance to plan ahead for work. If John Rine notices this thread he might give you a call perhaps. If you can get to work without driving and get a colleague to lift the heavier case files then you might well be able to something useful at work in the second week - depends how keen you are to get back more than anything else. Judging by the little I can guess about your occupation from our records I would expect you to be off work for 2 weeks and back to driving in 10-14 days from surgery - on average. You can ask Dr Rine about signing off arrangements at the pre-operative visit but I think this is mostly done by your own GP (displaying my hospital doctor ignorance here I'm afraid). To some extent return to work depends on what accommodations can be made - we have known people be back at work in a supervisory, 'hands off' role 2 daya after surgery if they can get there without driving.
